2.05-sun Shogi Table Board – Aya National Forest Kaya, 4-piece laminated, Straight-grain cut ( Item No. ST35 )
¥52,000
About the Wood
This board is made from kaya grown in the Aya National Forest, near Ayacho in Miyazaki. Wood from this forest is rare, and it has long been valued as a material for shogi and Go boards. The grain is very fine, and the board has a reddish tone.
About the Construction
This is a joined board, made from four pieces of wood. Compared to a single-plank board, this construction allows fewer constraints in selecting the wood, making it possible to combine pieces with beautiful straight grain.
About the Straight Grain
This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their clean, formal appearance and dimensional stability over time.
Aging and Natural Characteristics
There is a small mark on the underside of the board. This is a result of constraints in the available material; with more material to choose from, it could have been avoided. It does not affect the playing surface on top. It is a natural material, after all. Something is always there.
Choosing This Board
Very fine, orderly straight grain and a warm reddish tone, with no knots on the surface. This board comes together in a clean, well-composed way. For those who can accept the mark on the underside, it is worth considering within its price range.
