About the Construction

The board is cut from a single log, with no lamination. The natural character of the wood appears as it is across the surface — straight grain, a calm yellow tone, and an uncluttered face with no knots.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight-grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their clean appearance and dimensional stability over time.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 6-sun thick (approximately 18.2 cm). At this thickness, the sound of each piece spreads fully through the body of the board. The weight and stability of the board give the playing space a settled, grounded feeling.

Aging and Natural Characteristics

There are natural markings on the wood end, formed by internal movement and moisture within the log. These are visible now, but as kaya warms to a deep amber with use, the contrast at the end gradually fades into the surface.
