About the Wood

This is a single-plank floor Go board made from kaya grown in Shimane Prefecture — historically known as Izumo Province — a region long associated with fine timber. The kaya from these mountains grows slowly, producing dense rings and a characteristic texture. The board has a warm yellow tone and a finely grained surface. The wood feels smooth and slightly moist to the touch, in the way that well-aged kaya does. Stones land quietly, with a sound that lingers.

About the Construction

This board is cut from a single log. There are no joints. The natural character of the wood — its color, the movement of its grain — appears across the surface exactly as it grew.

About the Straight Grain

The board is cut in masame, or straight grain — taken toward the center of the log, so that the lines run parallel and even along the full length. Straight-grain boards are valued for their formal, composed appearance and their dimensional stability over decades of use.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 6-sun thick (approximately 18.2 cm). At this thickness, stones settle into the surface with a soft, resonant sound that travels through the wood and into the room. It is the kind of feel that takes time to describe and longer to forget.
