About the Wood

This board is made from kaya grown in Kyushu. Five straight-grain pieces are joined to form the playing surface. The result is a clean, knot-free board with a calm yellow tone.

About the Construction

This is a 5-piece laminated board. A higher number of joined sections may give some pause — but at Kumasu Go Board Studio, each seam is carefully positioned to fall along the board’s existing lines, so the surface remains visually consistent. There is no noticeable step or gap when placing pieces. With more sections, the natural movement of the wood is distributed across a greater number of joints, which tends to improve long-term stability rather than diminish it.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their clean, formal appearance and dimensional stability over time.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 2.1-sun thick (approximately 6.4 cm). This is a standard thickness for a table board, offering a well-balanced feel between weight and the sensation when placing pieces.

Aging and Natural Characteristics

No knots, a yellow tone, and an even grain across the full surface. Kaya deepens gradually to amber with use. The straight lines of the masame cut take on a quiet luster as the wood ages.
