2.05-sun Shogi Table Board – Kyushu Kaya, Single-piece, Straight-grain cut ( Item No. ST36 )
¥75,000
About the Wood
This board is made from kaya grown in Kumamoto Prefecture, in Kyushu. Kaya has been used for shogi and Go boards for centuries. The grain on this board is bold and strong, and the board has a reddish tone.
About the Construction
This is a single-plank board, cut directly from one log. Unlike laminated boards, the natural character of the wood appears as it is across the entire surface.
About the Straight Grain
This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. On this board, the straight grain appears with unusual force and boldness. The craftsman describes it as recalling the duel at Ganryujima, the legendary clash between the swordsmen Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. Even within the orderly structure of straight grain, this board carries that same sense of strength.
Choosing This Board
Bold, strong grain and a warm reddish tone, with no knots on the surface. The dignified character of straight grain comes through clearly here. For those drawn to a board with a powerful presence, this is a straightforward recommendation.
