1.95-sun Shogi Table Board – Hyuga Kaya, 4-piece laminated, Straight-grain cut ( Item No. 71KST03 )
¥71,000
About the Wood
This tabletop shogi board is made from kaya grown in Miyazaki Prefecture, known as Hyuga kaya. Hyuga kaya grows slowly in the harsh climate of southern Miyazaki, which produces tightly packed annual rings and a bold, distinctive grain. This board shows that character clearly.
About the Construction
The playing surface is made from four pieces of kaya joined together. Compared with a single-plank board, this construction is less limited by the size of available material, and the grain of each piece is used to its advantage. The joints are carefully fitted, and there is little difference in feel when placing pieces.
About the Straight Grain
This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their clean, formal appearance and dimensional stability over time.
Thickness and Feel
The board is 1.95-sun thick (approximately 5.9 cm). This is a slim profile for a table board, making it light to lift and easy to bring out for everyday use.
The Inscription on the Back
The back of the board carries the characters “盤心鏡” (Banshinkyo), a phrase favored by the shop owner’s father. It is understood to mean that a board reflects the heart of the person who makes it. The phrase was kept as a reminder to approach each board with an honest and upright heart.
Aging and Natural Characteristics
There are a few small knots on the playing surface. Kaya gradually deepens to a warm amber tone with use, and as the whole surface changes, the contrast with the surrounding wood quietly fades. It is a natural material, after all.
About the Presentation Box
This board comes with a kenjōbako (献上箱) — a traditional wooden presentation box with raised corners at the base. It can be used for long-term storage or as packaging for a gift. The box is a fitting companion for a board of this quality.
Choosing This Board
A warm reddish tone, fine grain, and a four-piece surface with few knots — this board was chosen to mark the studio’s 71st anniversary. With its presentation box, it is worth considering both as a gift and as a board to keep close for many years.
