About the Wood

This board is made from kaya grown in the Aya National Forest, a national forest area in Miyazaki. The trees grow slowly in rocky terrain, producing bold grain and a reddish tone. Kaya has long been used for Go boards, valued for its gentle elasticity and calm feel when stones are placed.

About the Construction

This is a single-plank board, cut directly from one log. Unlike joined boards, the natural character of the wood appears as it is, across the entire surface.

About the Flat Grain (Back Face)

This board is cut using the back-face flat-grain method, known as kiura. This cut is taken from a section closer to the outer part of the log, which tends to show a gently curving grain pattern. It suits wood with a bold, expressive grain.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 3.8-sun thick (approximately 11.5 cm). This is on the thicker side among table boards, offering a solid weight in hand and a deeper sound when stones are placed.

Aging and Natural Characteristics

There are a few small knots on the playing surface. These are natural marks found in the wood. Kaya deepens in color with use, and its reddish tone will grow richer over time — gradually softening the contrast with the knots as the whole surface ages.
