About the Wood

This board is made from kaya grown in Kyushu. The grain is fine and consistent — a sign that the tree grew slowly, accumulating density over many years. Among kaya boards, fine grain is generally an indicator of well-matured wood.

About the Construction

This is a 4-piece laminated board. Joining multiple sections helps control the natural movement of the wood and improves stability over time. The seams are aligned with the board’s lines, so the playing surface feels consistent when pieces are placed.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Combined with the fine grain of the material, the surface has a quiet, composed quality — clean lines without visual noise.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 1.35-sun thick (approximately 4.1 cm). This places it in the thinner range for a table board — easy to handle, light enough to move without difficulty, and undemanding of storage space.

Aging and Natural Characteristics

No knots, a yellow tone, and an even grain across the full surface. Kaya deepens gradually to amber with use. Fine-grained wood tends to age smoothly and evenly — the change is subtle and consistent rather than dramatic.
