About the Wood

This floor Go board is made from a single plank of kaya grown in Yunnan Province, China. Chinese kaya belongs to the same genus as Japanese kaya and has a long history of use in Go and shogi boards. This particular piece has strong red tones and a finely grained surface. The density of the wood is apparent when you hold it. It is a material worth taking seriously on its own terms.

About the Construction

This board is cut from a single log. There are no joints. The color, the grain, the character of the wood — all of it runs through the board as one continuous piece.

About the Straight Grain

The board is cut in masame, or straight grain — taken toward the center of the log, producing lines that run parallel and even along the full length. Straight-grain boards are known for their composed appearance and their stability over years of use.
