2.3-sun Shogi Table Board – Aya National Forest Kaya, Single-piece, Straight-grain cut ( Item No. ST37 )

¥80,000

About the Wood

This board is made from kaya grown in the Aya National Forest, near Ayacho in Miyazaki. Wood from this forest is rare, and it has long been valued as a material for shogi and Go boards. The grain is bold and strong, and the board has a reddish tone.

About the Construction

This is a single-plank board, cut directly from one log. Unlike laminated boards, the natural character of the wood appears as it is across the entire surface.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. The craftsman regards this board as a strong example of what a board from the Aya National Forest should look like, with grain that is both orderly and full of character.

Choosing This Board

Bold, well-formed straight grain and a warm reddish tone, with no knots on the surface. This board shows the character of Aya National Forest kaya at its best. It is a straightforward recommendation.
