About the Wood

This board is made from kaya sourced from the Aya National Forest. It has a reddish tone and a fine, even grain, and the playing surface shows the orderly character typical of Aya kaya. Kaya has been used for shogi boards for centuries, valued for its moderate elasticity and distinctive sound when pieces are placed.

About the Construction

This board is built from three pieces of wood joined together. Unlike a single-plank board, a laminated board combines several pieces of wood, making it possible to offer kaya’s natural qualities at a more accessible price. The joins are carefully finished and do not affect everyday use.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their clean, formal appearance and dimensional stability over time.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 1.45-sun thick (approximately 4.4 cm). This is a standard thickness for a table board, giving it a light and responsive feel when placing pieces.

Aging and Natural Characteristics

There are a few small knots on the underside of the board. They do not appear on the playing surface and have no effect on the board’s appearance during play. Kaya gradually deepens in color with use, and as the whole surface changes over the years, these knots will blend in as well.
