This board is made from kaya grown in Kumamoto, Kyushu — a 3-piece laminated construction. The annual rings are fine and close together, and the grain runs evenly across the surface. It carries the character of a tree that grew steadily over a long time.

About the Construction

This is a 3-piece laminated board. Three sections, selected from the same log, are joined together to form a single playing surface. At Kumasu, the boards are constructed so that the seam lines align with the grid lines of the shogi board — making the joins far less visible from the playing side.

About the Straight Grain

The board is cut in masame, or straight grain — taken from the center of the log, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. The fine annual rings and the straight-grain lines work together, giving the surface a calm, settled appearance.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 1.1-sun thick (approximately 3.3 cm). This is a board designed to be carried. It is light enough to travel with — easy to bring to a friend’s home, a trip, or anywhere with limited storage space. Thin as it is, the material is Japanese Kaya. The feel when placing pieces remains that of kaya.
