2.45-sun Shogi Table Board – Kyushu Kaya, Single-piece, Straight-grain cut
¥88,000
About the Wood
This board is made from a single plank of kaya grown in Kumamoto, Kyushu. The grain is bold, and a warm reddish tone spreads across the entire surface — a character that Kumamoto kaya is known for. The reddish tone will deepen evenly with use, gradually settling into a rich amber. The board will grow more composed with age.
About the Construction
This is a single-plank board, cut directly from one log. The natural character of the wood appears as it is across the entire surface.
About the Straight Grain
The board is cut in masame, or straight grain — taken from the center of the log, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. The bold grain and the clean straight lines work together, giving the surface a sense of density and presence.
Thickness and Feel
The board is 2.45-sun thick (approximately 7.4 cm). This is a substantial thickness for a table board. It carries real weight in the hand, and the surface responds with a solid, satisfying feel when pieces are placed.
Aging and Natural Characteristics
The bold grain and reddish tone will settle and deepen with use. This is a board that will look better in a few years than it does today.
Choosing This Board
This board suits those drawn to bold grain and warm color, and those who want real weight and feel from a table board. There are no knots, and considering the wood and thickness, it is a board worth looking at carefully across its price range.
