1.4-sun Shogi Table Board – Kyushu Kaya, Single-piece, Straight-grain cut

¥37,000

About the Wood

This board is made from a single plank of kaya grown in Kyushu. The grain is wide and pronounced — the intervals between growth rings are broad, and the marks of vigorous growth show clearly in the wood. Master craftsman Ken’ichi Kumasu notes that a tree that struggled in its environment often carries the most expressive traces of nature within it. The wide grain here is exactly that kind of record.

About the Construction

This is a single-plank board, cut directly from one log. The natural character of the wood appears as it is across the entire playing surface.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — the log is cut toward its center, producing parallel lines running the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their composed appearance and dimensional stability over time.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 1.4-sun thick (approximately 4.2 cm). This is a thinner table board — easy to handle, comfortable for extended sessions at a desk, and practical for storage or travel.

Choosing This Board

The playing surface is free of knots and comes together honestly. For those drawn to the character of a bold, expressive grain, this board offers the presence of a single-plank kaya at an accessible price point.
