About the Wood

This board is made from kaya grown in Miyazaki Prefecture. Raised in the demanding natural conditions of Kyushu, the wood carries a strong, pronounced grain. At this stage, some variation in tone is visible across the surface — but kaya deepens gradually with use, and the whole board settles into a warm, even amber over time. The differences quietly disappear.

About the Construction

This is a three-piece laminated board, assembled from sections taken from the same log. The grain flows consistently across the surface without notable interruption. Compared to a single-plank board, laminated construction tends to be more resistant to warping, offering long-term stability in use.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — the log is cut toward its center, producing parallel lines running the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their composed appearance and dimensional stability over time.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 2-sun thick (approximately 6.4 cm). There is a satisfying weight and resonance when pieces are placed, and the board has a quiet presence on the table.

Choosing This Board
