About the Wood

This board is made from a single plank of kaya grown in Shimane Prefecture, with a tree age of over 500 years. Kaya used for shogi and Go boards requires this kind of time — centuries of slow growth — before the wood is ready to become a playing surface. Shimane kaya grows in a different environment from the kaya of Kyushu or Aya. Different origins produce different expressions in the wood. This board carries a strong reddish tone and a fine, even grain. There is little here that could be called a flaw.
