About the Wood

This board is made from a single plank of kaya grown in Kyushu. Kaya has long been used for shogi and Go boards, valued for its elasticity and the rich resonance it gives when pieces are placed. Grown slowly in the Kyushu mountains, the wood is dense and carries a quiet warmth when touched.

About the Construction

This is a single-plank board, cut from one log. Without seams or joins, the surface ages as a single whole — deepening in color over time in a way that only a board cut from one piece of wood can do.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward its center, producing parallel lines running the full length of the board. The grain moves evenly across the entire surface, giving the board a composed appearance from every angle.

Thickness and Feel

The board measures 7.7-sun (approximately 23.3 cm) — the thickest among the current selection. Its presence is felt before a piece is placed. Sitting before this board, there is a kind of gravity to it. The sound when pieces land carries deep into the wood.

About the Staining on the Side

There is light staining on one side of the board. It is a natural mark from the wood’s growth, and it does not affect the playing surface. Kaya deepens gradually to a warm amber tone with use, and over time the staining will become less distinct as the surrounding wood changes around it.

Choosing This Board

Single-plank straight grain, and a thickness of 7.7-sun. Aside from the staining on the side, this board meets the conditions of a floor shogi board at a high level.
