About the Wood

This board is made from kaya grown in Shimane Prefecture. The log used is estimated to be over 500 years old. Wood that grows over such a long period develops densely packed annual rings and an even, fine grain pattern. The fragrance and elasticity are those of genuine kaya — qualities that remain consistent regardless of where the tree was grown.

About the Construction

This is a 3-piece laminated board, made by joining three planks with the grain aligned. At Kumasu Gobanten, laminated boards are constructed so that the seams align with the grid lines on the playing surface. This means the joins are rarely noticeable during play.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their clean appearance and dimensional stability over time.

Thickness and Feel
