About the Wood

This board is made from kaya grown in Kyushu. The grain is calm and even in appearance. Kaya has been used for shogi boards for centuries, valued for its moderate elasticity and the distinctive sound it produces when pieces are placed. The craftsman describes the feel of this board as good, true to kaya’s character even with its quieter grain.

About the Construction

This board is built from four pieces of wood joined together. Unlike a single-plank board, a laminated board combines several pieces of wood, making it possible to offer kaya’s natural qualities at a more accessible price. The joins are carefully finished and do not affect everyday use.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their clean, formal appearance and dimensional stability over time.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 2.1-sun thick (approximately 6.4 cm). This gives it a solid presence for a table board, with a firm response when placing pieces.

Aging and Natural Characteristics

Kaya gradually deepens in color with use, moving from its original pale tone toward a warm amber over the years. This board will develop its own character in the same way, through years of use.
