About the Wood

This board is made from a single plank of kaya grown in Kumamoto, Kyushu. Kaya has been used for shogi and Go boards for centuries, valued for its moderate elasticity and distinctive sound when pieces are placed. Kyushu-grown kaya is known for its rich fragrance and warm coloring.

About the Construction

This is a single-plank board, cut directly from one log. Unlike laminated boards, the natural character of the wood appears as it is across the entire surface.

About the Straight Grain

This board is cut in masame, or straight grain — a method where the log is cut toward the center, producing parallel lines running along the length of the board. Straight-grain boards are known for their clean appearance and dimensional stability over time.

Thickness and Feel

The board is 1.6-sun thick (approximately 4.8 cm). This is a manageable thickness for a table board, well suited to regular daily use. The weight feels balanced when held.

Aging and Natural Characteristics

The strong reddish tone is a defining quality of this board. Kaya deepens gradually into a warm amber with use — the current red will settle and mellow as the board ages, developing a quiet, layered richness over time. There is a small knot on one side of the board. It does not appear on the playing surface, and it will blend into the surrounding wood naturally with use. The underside shows a pattern of the wood’s internal structure — a record of how this tree grew over many years. It has been left as it is.

Choosing This Board

A single-plank board in straight grain with a distinctly red tone and fine grain pattern — one of the tighter-grained pieces from Kumamoto kaya. For those who can accept the small side knot and the natural markings on the underside, it is an accessible board at its price point.
